The Yin/Yang of Painting with Lois Woolley


The Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, NY

Art is a language where the communication is visual. In this family week workshop, Zhang and Woolley use the Chinese philosophy of Yin/Yang to help you find your own painterly voice.  Through observation of still life setups, practice, painting exercises and mixing paint, learn how to see and compare colors for their values, temperature and intensity.  This workshop is designed to support beginners, however, students of all levels are welcome.


August 7 - 11, 2017 Color, Form and Composition through Still Life The Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, NY


Zhang uses still life to teach the elements of oil painting. Objects are arranged to facilitate the flow and movement of the composition, their colors help set the tone, the lighting reveals form. Students develop a sense of how color in its' different values, temperatures and intensities work together to convey a painting's mood. Learn to use brushwork, space and edges to create a better illusion of three-dimensionality. Learn how to use Zhang's unique complementary color palette to create a beautifully harmonious painting.

Color & Light in the Landscape

The Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, NY

Paint plein-air at beautiful nearby Hudson Valley sites. Students will progress from a series of small studies to completing two finished landscape paintings. Demonstrations daily, along with at-easel instruction. Students must bring their own portable easel.
